Dear Parents/Guardians,
This June, a decision was made to overflow new student registrations that cannot be accommodated at Richmond School to Glendale School due to high enrolment pressures. Current enrolment trends indicate that students f rom the currently designated areas will exceed spaces available at Richmond School in the coming years.
To address these enrolment pressures at Richmond School, and to provide greater predictability for families, a decision has been made to re-designate portions of the Richmond School catchment to nearby schools.
West of Crowchild Trail Re-designation
Effective for the 2026-27 school year, kindergarten to Grade 6 regular program students living west of Crowchild Trail SW will be re-designated from Richmond School to Glendale School (see Map 1). This change will help lower the enrolment pressures at Richmond School and align cohorts into their designated junior high school.
- Glendale School is located at: 2415 Kelwood Dr SW, Calgary, AB T3E 3Z8 Phone: 403-777-8330.
- All new kindergarten to Grade 6 registrations for the 2026-27 school year and beyond will be designated to Glendale School.
- Students currently enrolled at Richmond School may remain there until completion of Grade 6, or transfer to Glendale School.
- Students who choose to remain at Richmond School will be considered out-of- attendance area, beginning in 2026-27 school year, and will not be eligible for transportation services to Richmond School as they remain within the established walk zone.
- Alternatively, Grade 5 students who choose to transfer to Glendale School for Grade 6 should know they will be starting at a new school again for Grade 7, meaning they will attend three schools in three years.
- Families residing west of Crowchild Trail SW should inform their school principal of their choice to remain at Richmond School or transfer to Glendale School by April 1, 2026.
- Richmond School students with siblings who will be new kindergarten to Grade 5 students in the 2026-27 school year may transfer to Glendale School to be with their siblings.
South of 33 Ave Re-designation
Effective for the 2026-27 school year, kindergarten to Grade 6 regular program students living south of 33 Ave SW will be re-designated from Richmond School to Altadore School (see Map 2). This change will help lower the enrolment pressures at Richmond School and enable some students to attend school closer to home.
- Altadore School is located at: 4506 16 St SW, Calgary, AB T2T 4H9 Phone: 403-777-6910.
- All new kindergarten to Grade 6 registrations for the 2026-27 school year and beyond will be designated to Altadore School.
- Current students attending Richmond School may remain there until completion of Grade 6, or transfer to Altadore School.
- Grade 5 students who choose to transfer to Altadore School for Grade 6 should know they will start at a new school again for Grade 7, meaning they will attend three schools in three years.
- Students attending Grade 5 at Richmond School for the 2025-26 school year and who live outside the walk zone will have continue to be eligible for transportation services to Richmond School for the 2026-27 school year only.
- Current kindergarten to Grade 4 students who choose to remain at Richmond School will be considered out-of-attendance area and may apply for transportation as conditional riders. Please see the Busing & Transportation page on the CBE website for details on Conditional Ridership. Transportation for eligible riders will end June 30, 2027, and there will not be an option for conditional riders.
- Families residing south of 33 Ave SW should inform their school principal of their choice to remain at Richmond School or transfer to Altadore School by April 1, 2026.
- Richmond School students with siblings who will be new kindergarten to Grade 5 students in the 2026-27 school year may transfer to Altadore School to be with their siblings.
Effective for the 2026-27 school year, the overflow designation from Richmond School to Glendale School will be rescinded.
As a result of the above designation changes, the previously established overflow will be rescinded for the 2026-27 school year. This means that a lottery will not be needed for entry into Richmond School for all new registrations who live within the new Richmond School catchment (see Map 3). New registrations to Richmond School for the current school year may still be overflowed to Glendale School, depending on space and resources available.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why were students residing south of 33 Ave SW re-designated to Richmond School in 2019 and now being re-designated back to Altadore School?
In 2019, Altadore School was full, and Richmond School had space to accommodate additional students. Right now, we are seeing continued enrolment growth at Richmond School and stable or slowly declining enrolment at Altadore School. As Calgary continues to evolve, the Calgary Board of Education needs to make changes to help alleviate enrolment pressures and support students with strong learning environments across the city.
What happens to new registrations at Richmond School for the current school year who live within the re-designated areas?
New registrations who live within the re-designated areas for the 2025-26 school year are designated to Richmond School. However, families are encouraged to register at Glendale and Altadore Schools as out-of-attendance area students as those will be the long-term designations for those communities and cohorts.
How do I register for school next year?
Registration for the 2026-27 school year starts in January 2026. For more information on how to register, please visit our website.
How will students get to school?
Students are eligible for transportation to their designated school if they live beyond the walk zone. Please note modes of transportation for middle and junior high school students can include yellow school bus service or Calgary Transit. Visit Busing & Transportation for more information. Service levels and fees will be confirmed by May 2026.
